Researchers should send reprints of their papers to Mark, Don, and Bill to ensure that they are included accurately in future bibliographies. The reprints are greatly appreciated.

The citations listed in this website were included in the annelid section of an extensive annual bibliography published in September 2005 by the North American Benthological Society in ''Current and Selected Bibliographies on Benthic Biology - 2004.'' That bibliography is available to current members of the Society [dues paid on an annual basis; membership information is available via the Society's website, above]. The annelid section of that complete bibliography is provided via this website for all of our annelidically-inclined colleagues worldwide for their professional [non-commercial] use to assist in furthering their scientific endeavors.

Introduction. The literature citations below are divided into the following groupings for the convenience of researchers: Aeolosomatida, Branchiobdellida, Oligochaeta, selected Polychaeta, Miscellaneous Annelida (Archiannelida, Echiura, Pogonophora, Sipunculida, and Vestimentifera), and Hirudinea. Several papers focusing on terrestrial annelids also have been included. Papers discussing taxa from more than one of the above groups will be included in each of those groups below. Researchers should send reprints of their papers to me to ensure that they are included accurately in future bibliographies. Please report inaccuracies to me [MJW] via E-mail (address above). Suggestions are welcome. The present format reflects comments received from colleagues. I thank INHS librarians Beth Wohlgemuth, Anna FitzSimmons, Jessica Beverly, and Liz Day for their assistance in accessing a variety of on-line bibliographic databases and also in obtaining inter-library loans of publications, and Kristi Moss for her assistance in entering bibliographic citations into the INHS Annelida Bibliography Database.
Unfortunately, certain letters and characters specific to one or more foreign languages cannot be coded into html for viewing on the Web. HTML coding for certain letters and characters in Czech, Greek, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian, Russian (and several other languages) may be coded in html for viewing when using Internet Explorer as your web browser; however, this coding often cannot be viewed correctly [equitably] when using one or more of the other common web browsers (e.g., Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, and/or Opera). In most cases, I have used a 'similar' letter in the English language, but without the unique character inflection. I apologize to those of you whose names and titles I cannot accurately cite on this page because of html limitations.
Most citations in this bibliographic compilation are followed by one or more numbers and letters in brackets [ ]. Numbers designate the taxonomic level of annelid identification: 1 = phylum, class, ordinal, or familial level of identification; 2 = generic or specific level of identification; 3 = new description, revision, re-description, or systematic work.

Abbreviations: A = Aphanoneura / Aeolosomatida; Ac = Acanthobdellae / Acathobdellida; B = Branchiobdellida; bib = bibliography; C = cytology; D = description; E = ecology; F = faunistic, or distributional information; G = general; H = Hirudinea; K = key provided; M = methods, such as analysis, collection, or processing information; O = Oligochaeta; P = Polychaeta; Ph = physiology; R = revision; Rvw = review; TMS = taxonomy, morphology, and / or systematics; X = toxicology; xO = interesting paper, but oligochaetes not discussed.

A number followed by a hyphen (-) and a letter indicates the level of identification for that letter group, e.g., [2-O] = species level of identification for Oligochaeta; [3-B] = new species, revision, or redescription of Branchiobdellida. Citations followed by an asterisk (*) were downloaded from one or more bibliographic databases but have not been verified for accuracy. Unless otherwise noted, all papers are written in English; many include one or more foreign language abstracts or summaries.

Other annual bibliographies for Annelida published in previous years by the North American Benthological Society in ''Current and Selected Bibliographies on Benthic Biology'' and available via the World Wide Web can be obtained at the following addresses:

Additional information relating to the study of aquatic Annelida can be obtained via The INHS Center for Annelida Resources. There, you will also find current information on upcoming as well as recently convened conferences, meetings, and symposia focusing on Annelida and other aquatic resources.

ANNELIDA - HIRUDINEA

PLEASE NOTE: The following section on Hirudinea was compiled by Dr. Donald J. Klemm and Dr. William E. Moser; contact information for Don and Bill is provided at the beginning of this website (above).

Areas of leech studies reviewed in this bibliography include those for both aquatic and terrestrial species, and focus on bioassessment, ecology, embryology, environmental and industrial toxicology, evolution, medicine, morphology, parasitology, physiology, systematics, and taxonomy of leeches. This bibliography is intended to assist students and other biologists by directing them to the most current literature on leeches. It is also provided to assist the user in selecting information from the literature to help in evaluating data collected during studies of water quality, stream ecosystems, and of the effects of toxic substances and other pollutants on the ecological integrity and health of indigenous communities of macroinvertebrates, including the leeches. Researchers should send reprints of their papers to Don Klemm, Bill Moser, and Mark Wetzel to ensure that they are included accurately in future leech bibliographies. The reprints are greatly appreciated.

[A few supplemental citations contributed by Mark to those compliled by Don and Bill are followed by bracketed codes; please refer to the explanation in the introductory information provided at the beginning of this website].
