Checklist of Genera
The phylogenetic analysis of the genera of Haliplidae presented by Beutel and Ruhnau (1990) showed that Peltodytes is monophyletic, and a sister-group of the remaining haliplid genera. Brychius is also monophyletic, and a sister-group of species included in Algophilus, Apteraliplus, and Haliplus. Haliplus is polyphyletic. Some Haliplus (Paraliaphlus) and some Haliplus (Liaphlus) are monophyletic with Algophilus and Apteraliplus. In spite of the thoroughness of their work, Beutel and Ruhnau considered their study as a first step toward future reorganization of the family (larval studies especially needed), and did not propose synonymies, elevate subgenera, or propose names for organizational units between family and species. In the interest of maintaining stability until these matters are resolved, this checklist retains the traditional division of the Haliplidae into five genera.
