Haliplus Latreille 1802:77

Most recent works on Haliplus use the subgenera proposed by Guignot (1955), but this work, as well as his 1939 paper on Haliplus, are based upon an incorrectly fixed type species for the genus. See the discussion under the type species for Haliplus found above. It is more appropriate to use the earlier proposal of subgenera by Guignot (1928), with later additions (Guignot 1930, 1935).

Subgenera of Haliplus as understood by Guignot (1928, 1930, 1935).

*Wallis (1933:2) included a translation of Guignot's (1930) key to the subgenera of Haliplus in his revision of North American (north of Mexico) Haliplus. It was a verbatum translation, and where Guignot used the words "Paraliaphlus, nov. subg.", Wallis only omitted the comma. The editors of the Zoological Record for 1933 (vol. 70, part 11, page 198) subquently credited Wallis for the new subgenus. Guignot (1935:36) pointed out this error in a footnote to his paper adding a sixth subgenus to Haliplus.
