Synonymy
Haliplus (Liaphlus) subguttatus Crotch 1873:384
- Haliplus cribrarius subsp. subguttatusLeConte MSS, by Blatchley 1910
- Haliplus subguttatus Roberts 1913:100, nec Crotch 1873:384?
- Haliplus fulvus (Fabricius 1801:271), in Van Vondel 1991:103
Hilsenhoff and Brigham (1978) trace the history of Haliplus subguttatus. They note that LeConte first used the name in a manuscript for a series of specimens from Lake Superior that he believed were distinct from Haliplus cribrarius LeConte. The name subguttatus was first published by Crotch (1873:384) under cribrarius with the comment that "other specimens marked H. subguttatus, Lec. MSS. are darker in color but not otherwise distinct." Blatchley (1910) further described subguttatus, with credit to the LeConte manuscript and specimens, and included it as a subspecies of cribrarius. Roberts (1913:100) described subguttatus from Massachusetts, believing that the species had not yet been described, but may have been looking at a species different from that described by LeConte, Crotch, and Blatchley. Leech (1964) and Hilsenhoff and Brigham (1978) offer that this may account for the wide variation in subguttatus noted by earlier authors.
Subsequently, Van Vondel (1991) placed Haliplus subguttatus as a junior synonym of Haliplus fulvus (Fabricius). However, differences in the male genitalia of Haliplus subguttatus figured by Wallis (1933), Hilsenhoff and Brigham (1978), Van Vondel (1991)- as Haliplus fulvus, and specimens in my collection suggest that more than one species is involved. I have followed a conservative course here and list Haliplus subguttatus as distinct from Haliplus fulvus.
