*Fabricius' original spelling of the generic name was "Elophorus". This was emended to "Helophorus" by Illiger (1801). Subsequent authors have used this emendation almost exclusively. Recently, R. B. Angus submitted an application for conservation of the name "Helophorus" to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature.
