Canthydrus Sharp 1880-1882:269

  • Type species: Canthydrus guttula (Aube 1838:410), by subsequent designation of Guignot 1946:116

Suphisellus was created by Crotch (1873:397), but his name did not see general usage until nearly half a century later. In discussing the group, Sharp (1880-1882:269) commented that Crotch had "suggested for it the name of Suphisellus, but not in a formal manner. He, therefore, proposed the new name Canthydrus. It wasn't until Zimmermann (1921:187) that Suphisellus re-appeared, and then in a problematic way (see Suphisellus). Zimmermann restricted Canthydrus to Old World species, except for Canthydrus buqueti LaPorte and two species he was about to describe, all from South America.

Canthydrus contains approximately 60 species, mostly from Africa and the Indo-Sino-Malasian region. Two species are known from Australia and nearby islands. Presently, four species of Canthydrus are recognized from the New World, but they are poorly known and may represent a distinct genus. Leech (1970) and Young (1979) both imply dissatisfaction with the application of Canthydrus to the neotropical fauna.
