The Lake Michigan Biological Station (LMBS) was established in 1985 to conduct research on Lake Michigan. LMBS is located one mile from the Lake Michigan shoreline just south of the Wisconsin border, in the North Unit of Illinois Beach State Park.

Research at LMBS is designed to improve management of various Lake Michigan fisheries and to better understand the ecology of the lake. LMBS also provides outreach to the citizens of Illinois on aquatic invasive species in a partnership with Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant and U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
