Illinois Biological Station Assistant Team Leader

                     

Supervise a staff of five permanent staff and four hourly technicians. Duties include develop research proposals and budgets associated with them. Insure all contractual obligations are fulfilled and budgets expended properly. Secure scientific grants. Attend meetings with state, federal and NGO’s regarding field station and Illinois River basin issues. Conduct regular field station staff meetings. Signatory authority on hourly staff time sheets.

 

Fisheries Specialist - Component Crew Leader - Long Term Resource Monitoring Program (LTRMP)  

   

Supervise and assist with the of monitoring fish community composition on La Grange Reach, Illinois River using nets, seines, trawls and electroshocking; identifying, weighing, and measuring fish; maintenance of field equipment including vehicle, boats, trailers, and nets; data entry and database management; data analysis, report preparation, maintain Global Imaging System(GIS) software and coverage’s for fish component. Collecting, preparing, and reading scales and otolith for age and growth analysis. Boat operation in main channel, side channels, and backwaters of the Illinois River. Maintenance of buildings and grounds

 

Project Leader - Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program Great River Ecosystems (EMAP)

 

Supervise and assist Illinois River Biological Station staff in the collection and quality assurance of samples and field measurements for biotic and abiotic characteristics of the Great Rivers of the Central Basin of the United States following procedures developed by the U.S. EPA. Biological indicators sampled are water chemistry, plankton, aquatic vegetation, riparian habitat, fish, fish tissue, benthic macroinvertebrates, periphyton and sediment.

 

Fisheries Project - Leader Habitat Rehabilitation and Enhancement Programs (HREP)

 

Supervise and assist with collection of adult and larval fish in selected side channels and backwater lakes of Peoria and La Grange Reach, Illinois River using gill nets, fyke nets, hoop nets, seines and electrofishing, larval fish light traps, plankton tows and experimental hoop nets. Identifying, weighing and measuring fish. Collecting, preparing scales and otoliths for age and growth. Data entry and verification. Maintenance of field equipment including boats, water quality meters, and nets.

Research Support

 

Assist with field collection of aquatic organisms including bighead carp, silver carp, common carp, zooplankton and turtles for ongoing research activities.

 

Macroinvertebrate Specialist

 

Monitor macroinvertebrate community in La Grange Reach, Illinois River using ponar dredge. Wash, identify, and preserve target species. Insure data are sent to the data entry contractor in a timely fashion and that all necessary corrections are applied to data and returned to Environmental Management Technical Center. Maintain all macroinvertebrate equipment.

Sediment Range Transect Project Leader

 

Supervise in monitoring of sediment deposition of La Grange Reach, Illinois River backwaters. Responsibilities were to use Global Positioning System (GPS) to locate sediment range transcects, use auto level to obtain water elevations, use sounding pole to obtain water depth and record data. Other duties maintain sediment range equipment and insure data is sent to Environmental Management Technical Center (EMTC) in a timely fashion.

 

Water Quality Technician

 

Assist in monitoring water quality on La Grange Reach, Illinois River. Parameters include: temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, PH and secchi disk transparency. Boat, trailer and hovercraft maintenance.

 

Vegetation Technician

 

Assist in monitoring of vegetation on Peoria and La Grange Reach, Illinois River. Identifying aquatic macrophytes and floodplain forest inventory.

 

Zebra Mussel Technician

 

Assist in the collection, washing and sorting of .25 meter-squared zebra mussel quadrats taken from various sample locations on the Illinois River.

 

Illinois River Largemouth Bass Tagging Project - Fisheries Component

           

Collection of Largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) using LTRMP gear in addition to working bass club sponsored tournaments of the Illinois River. Tag all bass with fluorescent floy tag, nylon blank tag and fin clip for positive identification. Using these bass to get length, weight and movement data. Also fit bass with radiotags, locate and record telemetry data. Collecting, preparing and reading scales and otolith for age and growth analysis. Maintenance of bass database which included entering all initial capture and recapture information.
