Honors, Awards, Distinctions

We administer two grant programs. One is the Herbert Holdsworth Ross Memorial Award, which is administered jointly by the Center for Biodiversity and the UIUC Department of Entomology, and supports research in systematics of any group of organisms. The second is the Philip W. Smith Memorial Award, which supports research in any area of natural history. For both, eligibility is INHS staff and UIUC faculty and graduate students, but in recent years grad students have been the recipients. We send out the Request for Proposals in February to appropriate UI departments and the Survey, the application deadlines are in March, and awards are announced about April 1. Awards have been limited to no more than $1000, and typically three Ross awards and two Smith awards have been awarded annually.
