Haliplus Latreille 1802:77

  • Type species: Dytiscus impressus Fabricius 1787 [= Haliplus (Haliplus) ruficollis (DeGeer 1774)], by subsequent designation of Latreille (1810), by subsequent designation by Holmen (1987:133).

The identity of the type species of Haliplus has only recently been resolved by Holmen (1987). He notes that Latreille (1802) created the genus Haliplus for two species: Dytiscus impressus Fabricius 1787 sensu Latreille [mis-identified Dytiscus fulvus Fabricius 1801] and Dytiscus obliquus Fabricius 1787. Latreille (1810) subsequently designated Dytiscus impressus Fabricius 1787 as the type species of his genus.

Latreille's (1806) illustration of his impressus is, in fact, the species now knows as Haliplus fulvus (Fabricius 1801). A lectotype for Dytiscus impressus Fabricius 1787 [=Dytiscus ruficollis DeGeer 1774] is designated by Holmen (1987:133). Holmen (1987:90) notes that although most European authors follow Balfour-Browne (1938), who proposed Dytiscus obliquus Fabricius 1787 as the type species (see also Guignot 1939:176), this designation is not valid under a ruling by the ICZN (art. 69, a, vi).

Most recent works on Haliplus use the subgenera proposed by Guignot (1955), but this work, as well as his 1939 paper on Haliplus, are based upon an incorrectly fixed type species for the genus. It is more appropriate to use the earlier proposal of subgenera by Guignot (1928).
