The local police closed the highway in North Carolina when Elson Shields came to town to collaborate with Charlie Main last summer. The highway provided a perfect runway for Shields' airborne RPV (remote piloted vehicle) to test out his aerial sampling methods with bluemold fungal spores in North Carolina's atmosphere. Shields developed the system initally to trap leafhoppers and has recently modified the system to work with Fusarium and Phytophthora fungal spores that cause plant disease. The only tense moment was avoiding crashing into the police car that blocked traffic at the end of the "runway."
