Our laboratory at the Illinois Natural History Survey works to resolve pest problems through the use of biological control -- i.e., the use of natural enemies to control pests -- and fitting biological control into real IPM solutions. Biological control uses predators, parasites and pathogens against insect pests; and herbivores, pathogens and competitors against weed pests. Biological control is a very potent tactic in an IPM tool kit, and it has been successful in hundreds of cases around the world over the last 100+ years (at least in the US).
The projects in our lab are diverse, and the direction has shifted a little
over the past few years, as we have added weed biological control and
the impacts of transgenic technology on natural enemies. Described on
some of the linked pages are specific projects,
studying the biology of predators and parasites, the implementation of
one weed biological control project, and spin-offs from the projects.
We also describe teaching and workshop efforts,
and the annual specialty courses offered in biological control, known
as the Midwest Institute
for Biological Control; these courses are a collaborative effort among
biological control practitioners in the Midwest. And finally, we list
the lab personnel and tangible outputs (e.g.,
publications, grant support). Please feel free to contact us for any further
information about any of the projects.
