Employment of Aliens

New Policy Date: August 1988   Revision Date: August 2003

POLICY:

Aliens may be employed by the Surveys. All candidates for employment are to be examined not only for their qualifications for the position but also for their acceptability to the United States Government. They must be legally employable in accordance with U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service regulations. Preference may be given to candidates with permanent residency or on a long-term visa at the time of application.

The University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (UIUC) is an authorized sponsor for all foreign employees, including students, faculty, academic and State-funded staff. The Surveys’ Human Resources Managers are liaisons with the UIUC Office of International Faculty and Staff Affairs and the UIUC Office of International Student Affairs.

The U. S. State Department requires that aliens have a minimum guaranteed salary and supplemental funding for family members. Proof of funding is required, and documentation must be on official letterhead with current date and original signature of funding authority. Aliens who fail to meet the requirements of the position, who engage in unauthorized employment, or who willfully fail to maintain the required health insurance coverage for themselves and any dependents are in violation of the Exchange Visitor immigration status and will be terminated from employment.

The respective Human Resources Manager should be consulted before advancing any plan for employment of an alien.
