Shoots: opposite leaf arrangment; simple leaf type; dentate, lobed (pinnately), lobed (palmately) leaf margin; Palmate leaf venation

Flowers: perfect; 5 merous; complete, irregular; red, violet; hypogynous ovary position

Ecology & Natural History

Habitat: Species is distributed in shaded areas, disturbed woods, edges of barnyards; city parks.

ILPIN Notes: Young plant is eaten fresh or boiled; used as a bitter tonic; may cause dermatitis. Corolla is bearded; calyx lobes forming stiff slender spines. Regarding weediness, species may be economic or colonizing. Species is less common in the southern half of state.
