Species Description

General: Monocot, perennial

Roots: adventitious, rhizomes, stolons

Shoots: alternate leaf arrangment; simple leaf type; entire leaf margin; Parallel leaf venation; awl-shaped leaf shape

Inflorescence: head

Flowers: perfect; 3 merous; incomplete, not petals, not sepals; hypogynous ovary position

Fruit: achene

Physiology: autotrophic

Ecology & Natural History

Habitat: Species is distributed along roadsides, and on swales in bottom prairies.

ILPIN Notes: Species is scattered throughout Illinois. Versus Eleocharis acicularis, E. wolfii has: 1) somewhat larger achenes; 2) wider culms, usually inrolled; 3) somewhat longer scales. Type collected by John Wolf from Fulton county, Illinois.
