Aquatic macroinvertebrates are animals that live in the water and are large enough to be seen with the naked eye. They include larvae of many insects, crayfishes, snails, clams, leeches, and more. Many of these groups can be used as indicators of the quality of the water.

Larvae of Ephemeroptera (mayflies), Plecoptera (stoneflies), and Trichoptera (caddisflies) are typically only found in high quality streams.

Larvae of Diptera (flies), especially chironomids, are found in all types of aquatic habitat.
