True White Grub - Phyllophaga spp.
Japanese Beetle - Popillia japonica

Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae

Identification
• Larva is a C-shaped white grub up to 1" long.
• Refer to Japanese beetle card for adult ID and damage.
• Masked chafer adults are 1/2" long, stout, tan, June beetles.
• True white grub adults are usually 1" long, stout, brownish, May beetles.

Damage
• Grubs feed on grass roots causing dieback and browning of turf, usually in late summer to early fall.
• Heavily damaged turf can be pulled back like a carpet due to many of the roots being eaten.
• True white grub adults feed on the leaf margins of oak, ash, crabapple, and other trees at night during  spring.

Management
• Adults lay few eggs in unwatered turf or under trees.
• Scout irrigated turf in early August by cutting through the turf and pulling it back. Ten or more grubs per square foot will cause turf damage and require insecticide treatment.
