Imagine if we put all of the GM pots on one side of the rack. If this side was closer to the window, then all of the plants might grow better on that side because they received more light. We would then erroneously conclude that plants in GM soils grew the best, when in reality they grew best because of the light, not the soils. 

Here is an example of randomized samples. You are free to use this one or make up your own. Note that the racks have twenty spots each, arranged in five rows of four. If you set the two racks side by side in front of you so that they have five spots going up and four across, then the numbers in the rack position column in the spreadsheet refer to the following spots:
