Orthoptera: Gryllidae
Identification
• Adults are pale green with long antennae and broad wings that lie
flat on the back when at rest. The nymphs are similar, but without wings
or with only short wing pads.
Host range
• Tree crickets are true omnivores and will eat foliage, fruit, fungi,
pollen, and also small insects.
Life cycle
• Tree crickets have incomplete metamorphosis and the eggs are laid
in pin-size holes made in the bark of trees. They spend the winter this
way and hatch each spring. They have one generation per year.
Other information
• The snowy tree cricket chirps at a regular rate that is dependent
on the temperature. By adding 40 to the number of chirps heard in 15 seconds,
one can get a good approximation of the outside air temperature.
