Identification
• Insects that have a distinctly fuzzy appearance,
and/or are discolored are likely the victims of a fungal disease. Common
examples are the window pane fungus and Beauvaria bassiana.
Host range
• Fungi can be host-specific (infect only one or a few types of insects)
or generalists (infect a wide variety of insects).
Life cycle
• Fungal life cycles vary from very simple to very complex. Transmission
from an infected host to a susceptible host is the result of a spore that
germinates on the body wall of the susceptible host, sends a germ tube
into the body cavity, thus beginning the infection.
Other information
• Most entomologists believe that fungi are a prime factor in keeping
many insect populations in check.
