Superfamily: Proctotrupoidea

Characteristics

Proctotrupoids are very diverse morphologically and biologically. They are typically heavily sclerotized, often highly polished, and extremely variable in size (ranging in length from less than 1 mm to 70 mm). The pronotum extends to the tegula, differentiating members of this superfamily from the chalcidoids. Wing venation is typically reduced, although some taxa (e.g., the Roproniidae) have extensive venation. Few workers have examined this group, therefore the biology and taxonomy of its members are poorly understood.
