Searching the Database for the Fiji Arthropod Survey

Over 226,500 specimens have been processed (as of 30 August 2007) and sent to specialists for identification! Fiji WebMandala data may now be searched with two flavors of simple or an advanced search engine. The first simple search is from data mirrored at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, HI, and is accessible without connection speed restrictions. Begin a new simple search by typing in a specific taxonomic name or search for a name of a higher taxonomic rank such as a family or order to see a list of taxa in the database. Click a taxon name to see its hierarchy and expand the + sign if there are specimens found with that taxonomic name. Or, check this list of taxon identifications with numbers of specimens (last updated 31 January 2007)

SIMPLE SEARCH (BPBM Mirror)

The second simple search allows more search options and is based on specimens, localities, taxa, and literature. This updated (30 August 2007) search interface expands and refines the choices that debuted on 10 May 2007.

The simple search with more options and the more advanced search interfaces are housed with the main Fiji Mandala database at the Illinois Natural History Survey on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The advanced database format uses a FileMaker® Instant Web Publishing engine. The advanced interface has the rich feel of a real database experience and a broadband internet connection is highly recommended. If you would like to find out more before diving in, some help is provided to get you started or at least find out about critical navigational tools first!

About Mandala...

Mandala is a database system originally created under a grant from the National Science Foundation's PEET (Partnerships for Enhancing Expertise in Taxonomy) program to study the fly family Therevidae. It was designed to track specimen-based biodiversity data and detail complex nomenclatural histories with their associated literature. The features of this database system, whose engine is based on the Mac & Windows compatible FileMaker® Pro, have been expanded substantially for the Fiji Arthropod Survey to deal with tracking subsamples sorted from Malaise traps and sent to specialists as loans. To see more about enhancements made to Mandala for the Fiji Project, view the poster presentation (pdf 11.7 MB) from the 2005 meeting of the Entomological Society of America. To find out more about the features of Mandala, see the overview presentation.
