David and CYCLE participants

David Yeates asks CYCLE (Community Youth Creative Learning Experience) participants to find characters on a dragonfly that they can use to determine in which insect order it belongs, using LucID(tm), a computerized key builder and player. Participants looked at body shape and wing veination to bring the choice down to two orders and then looked at pictures of the insects in remaining orders to determine what they had (Odonata). They also keyed out a fly (Diptera) and mantid (Mantoidea).

CYCLE participants came from Chicago for a one day program at the Illinois Natural History Survey on Saturday, May 2, 1998. Members of the therevid PEET team put together a program for three groups of CYCLE participants, ranging from grades 3-8, answering the questions "What is taxonomy?" and "What do taxonomists do and why is it important?"
