One
aspect of informal training of our therevid PEET group came in the
form of a weekly "sort night." Tuesday nights the dipterists
caught a quick dinner together then hit the museum at the Illinois
Natural History Survey, picking through the unsorted Diptera or
working on critical Diptera-related projects: Mark Metz worked at
curating the Syrphidae; Kevin Holston the Asilidae; and Steve Gaimari
the unsorted Acalyptrates. It was an evening to learn from one another
and help the museum label and classify specimens so that they could
be sent to other specialists for determination. Pictured from left
to right are Kevin Holston, Michael Irwin, and Mark Metz. Unpictured,
but also part of the regular sort night gang were Don Webb, Steve
Gaimari, and Martin Hauser. Visiting dipterists have also lent their
expertise when present on Tuesday nights.
