Acoustic Monitoring for Bats
at the North Chicago Wetland Mitigation Site

Bats, like birds, have distinctive calls. In September of 2016 we deployed acoustic monitors at four locations in NCWMB and recorded more than 1,200 bat passes.

Four species were detected by the detectors:

  • Lasiurus borealis - Eastern Red Bat
  • Lasionycteris noctivagans - Silver-haired Bat
  • Eptesicus fuscus - Big Brown Bat
  • Nycticeius humeralis - Evening Bat

  • Ultrasonic bat acoustic monitor

  • Red Bat

  • Big Brown Bat

  • Silver-haired Bat

Wildlife Acoustics Song Meter SM3BAT Bioacoustic Recorders were placed at 4 locations and recorded from sunset to sunrise.

Kaleidoscope Pro and SonoBat™ were used to analyze recordings.
