Activities Senior Scientist - Bird Conservation

Research
My research is focused on applied issues relating to the conservation of birds and their habitats. I am collaborating with biologists from the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center to develop and implement analytic techniques to use survey data from Audubon's Christmas Bird Count to assess distribution and population change in North American Birds. As chair the National Technical Committee for the U.S. Important Bird Areas Program I am responsible for compiling and assessing quantatative information on bird populations to develop and implement criteria and thresholds for identifying those sites most critical to sustaining populations of vulnerable bird species. For Audubon's Waterbirds on Working Lands project I am working to assess the impact of agricultural activities on waterbirds, particularly in regions where agriculture constitutes a high percentage of the land use. I am also developing a set of indicators on the condition of bird communities throughout North America that can serve as the basis for an annual report on the State of the Birds.
