| Activities | My primary activity is making sure that the library users have access to the information that they require for their research and studies. The Natural History Survey Library serves a wide range of library users. As a state agency library it strives to meet the diverse research needs of the Survey scientists and staff members. This includes the INHS field stations that are scattered throughout the state. The INHS library is also a departmental library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, so students, faculty, and staff are frequent users of the library. The public is also welcome to visit the library. The collection includes over 44,000 books and bound journals providing national and international coverage on all aspects of Natural History. We also maintain a database that contains the records for all of the INHS staff publications and technical reports. There are approximately 650 current journal subscriptions. The INHS library’s holdings are part of the UIUC’s on-line catalog and can be accessed on the library’s home page at http://www.library.uiuc.edu/nhx. The proliferation of electronic resources has presented many new challenges. Library users need to be kept informed about all the new resources available. Also it is increasingly difficult to stay within the budget and maintain a balance between print and electronic resources. A number of services are available to our library users. We have a photocopying service, offer personalized Current Content searches, and put items on reserve for professors and staff members. We maintain an online new book list, have an online list of the INHS journals, and post on the web journal issues received that day. A reference librarian is always on hand to help people find the information they need and there is an ongoing library instruction program. |
