Images of Prairie Plants — Genera Beginning with the Letter "G"

  • Gentiana alba or Gentiana flavida (yellow gentian) [Gentianaceae, Gentian Family]

  • Gentiana andrewsii (closed or bottle gentian) [Gentianaceae, Gentian Family]

  • Gentiana or Gentianopsis crinata (fringed gentian) [Gentianaceae, Gentian Family]

  • Gentiana procera or Gentianopsis procera (small fringed gentian) [Gentianaceae, Gentian Family]

  • Gentiana puberulenta (downy gentian) [Gentianaceae, Gentian Family]

  • Gentiana or Gentianella quinquefolia (stiff gentian) [Gentianaceae, Gentian Family]

  • Gentiana saponaria (soapwort bottle gentian) [Gentianaceae, Gentian Family] — in Illinois, this plant is much less common than Gentiana andrewsii and is found mostly in moist sand savannas

  • Geranium maculatum (wild geranium) [Geraniaceae, Geranium Family] — not a prairie plant, but a spring woodland wildflower, sometimes also found in savannas

  • Geum canadense (white or wood avens) [Rosaceae, Rose Family] — a woodland rather than a prairie plant — compare the fruits of this species with those of Geum triflorum. In G. canadense the achese has a persistent style that is hooked in order to attach itself to the fur of passing animals (or the pants legs of hikers!).

  • Geum triflorum (prairie smoke) [Rosaceae, Rose Family]

  • Glandularia canadensis or Verbena canadensis (rose verbena) [Verbenaceae, Vervain Family]

  • Gnaphalium or Pseudognaphalium obtusifolium (sweet everlasting or old-field balsam) [Asteraceae or Compositae, Sunflower Family]
