- Locality Information for Sites Surveyed in September 2000 -

2000 Surveys for aquatic oligochaetes and other macroinvertebrates were conducted by M.J. Wetzel and M.A. Peggy Morgan on 17-22 September. Sixteen stream sites and two spring sites in the Park were surveyed during this visit. Dr. Becky J. Nichols (NPS) assisted us on 21 September at six sites associated with the Ravensford Wetland area (Raven Fork / Oconaluftee drainage).

Locality information, presented below for each site surveyed in 2000, is taken from current editions of USGS topographic quadrangle maps (USGS tqm). UTM = Universal Transverse Mercator System coordinates. Because I have used different GPS units during my field trips, latitude and longitude coordinates for some of the earlier (1999, 2000) collections were reported in degrees, minutes, and seconds; these coordinates will be converted to decimal degrees in the near future. Site locality information below (those with links to TopoZone.com) include latitude and longitude coordinates that have been converted entirely to decimal degrees. All field coordinates obtained with GPS units are checked against information presented on the topographic quadrangle maps, then verified using TopoZone.com prior to entry into fields in the project database. Elevation (water level of stream, or at spring outflow) is expressed in feet above mean sea level (MSL). Please note that some of the UTM and latitude/longitude coordinates associated with the locality information for each site, below, may vary slightly from that included on the vial and jar labels associated with specimens distributed to other aquatic biologists working on this project; in most cases, these coordinates have been adjusted for accuracy using TopoZone.com. Location shift should be less than 30m for most sites. Habitat characterizations, site photographs, and values for field water quality parameters monitored at each site during the biological survey will be posted here soon.

Information pertaining to the processing of these samples is linked from "Progress" in the navigation footer at the bottom of this webpage. This work was summarized in a project report (Wetzel 2000) submitted to DLIA, and also summarized in a presentation to participants of the annual DLIA meeting in Gatlinburg, TN, 18-20 December 2000.
