The primary objective of this web-based directory is to facilitate communication among systematists, ecologists, and field biologists who conduct research on freshwater, estuarine, marine, and terrestrial annelid worms - especially Oligochaeta. Institutional affiliation, postal, electronic mail, and world wide web site addresses, and telephone numbers presently are included. As soon as a searchable database can be implemented for the world wide web, a summary of the researcher's areas of ecological, geographical, taxonomic, and systematic interests and expertise will also be available. This directory, first established in 1982, now includes over 340 scientists from 54 countries. During 1994, a revised questionnaire was distributed to previous respondents, to researchers expressing interest in this directory, to participants of past International Symposia on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology (ISAOB), and to authors of journal articles discussing one or more aspects of annelid biology.
This site also includes much information related to oligochaetology -- announcements of upcoming (and recently convened) symposia, conferences, meetings, taxonomic/systematic discussions, recent publications, and memoria for colleagues who have passed away.
Please verify the accuracy of the information; send corrections and / or changes to me via E-mail. Contact information is updated periodically, noted by an asterisk, and then followed by date of change. Asterisks will be removed after new changes have been posted for 1 year.
If you are working with oligochaetes, but are not included on this list, please contact me with the appropriate information, and a short summary of your research interests; I will be glad to add your contact information to this list. Thank you.
Important Notice: On 30 July 2002, all 'automatic' E-mail options (clicking on E-mail addresses to automatically send an E-mail message directly from this website) were changed; you must now paste the E-mail address into your own E-mail software program. On 11 June 2003, ALL E-mail addresses listed on this site were modified: the '@' symbol has been replaced with '{AT}' to deter the 'mining' or 'harvesting' of these webpages by spammers, phishers, malwarers, adwarers, and their ilk who use programs to collect valid E-mail addresses. A recent study released by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission found that 86% of E-mail addresses posted on webpages and in internet news-groups eventually end up on lists used by spammers and phishing entities. You must replace the '{AT}' with the '@' symbol in order for your E-mail message to be sent and received. Hopefully, this will reduce at least some unwanted E-mail messages.

"A Guide to European Terrestrial and Freshwater Species of Enchytraeidae (Oligochaeta)" by Rüdiger M. Schmelz and Rut Collado. This guide is published as a special issue of Soil Organisms (formerly "Abhandlungen und Berichte des Naturkundemuseums Görlitz"). Publisher: Senckenberg Museum für Naturkunde Görlitz. Volume 82(1). 176 pp. ISBN 978-3-0909854-6-8. Û 38, - + shipping costs.
The purpose of this book is to facilitate and to stimulate work with enchytraeids, a notoriously difficult but ecologically important group of small oligochaete worms. Our critical guide to the identification of 206 species of European enchytraeids includes the recent taxonomic advances (new species, revisions, improved standards of description) and also results of original research on a number of genera. Marine and exotic species are excluded. The illustrated keys are preceded by detailed introductions into the taxonomic traits, the general anatomy of enchytraeids, and the technique of handling living worms during the identification process - fixed specimens cannot be identified with certainty. Due to persistent taxonomic problems in many groups, a 'sensu lato' approach is adopted in the circumscription of several common species. We attach a preview of the first 14 pages of the book. Please forward this announcement to other possibly interested persons.

In Memoriam: Michael Robert Milligan, Oligochaetologist (1951-2005)
Our good friend and colleague, Michael R. Milligan, passed away on Friday, 19 November 2005, at his apartment in Sarasota, Florida; he was 54 years old. Michael was born on 1 August 1951, in Park Ridge, Illinois, the son of Isabelle and Leslie Milligan. He is survived by his father in Arlington Heights, Illinois; sisters Kathleen, Janice, and Carol; a daughter Molly and twin sons Max and Hank; three nieces and a nephew; and Nadine, his close companion and friend for many years.
Mike completed his primary and secondary education in Park Ridge, graduating from Maine South High School in 1969. He was an Eagle Scout, Boy Scouts of America. Michael completed his undergraduate education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, receiving his B.S. degree in Zoology/Marine Biology in 1973. While an undergraduate, Mike worked part time as a benthic technician for NALCO Chemical in the Chicago region. He later enrolled in graduate school at the University of Southern Mississippi, receiving a Masters of Science degree in 1979. In May 1984, Mike took a position as a benthic biologist at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, Florida, working there until August 1993 before leaving to start his own consulting firm in Sarasota, the Center for Systematics and Taxonomy.
In 1991, Mike enrolled in a PhD program at Göteborg University in Göteborg, Sweden, under the direction of Dr. Christer Erséus. He studied with Dr. Erséus at both Göteborg University and also at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet) in Stockholm for short periods of time over the course of several years, but for a variety of reasons did not complete his doctoral program, choosing to focus on taxonomy projects through his business in Sarasota, Florida.
Mike was one of the 'founding fathers' of the Florida Association of Benthologists (FAB) (est. 1987), and was elected and served as the Association's President for the years 1990 and 1991; he received the Association's Award of Excellence in Benthic Science award in December 1997. Mike was a perennial member of the Association's Executive Committee, and served on several other FAB standing committees, and prior to his death, had served for several years as chairman of the Award of Excellence Selection Committee. Mike was also instrumental in organizing and presenting several annual taxonomic workshops for FAB that were traditionally convened during the October meetings at the Lime Tree Bay Resort / Keys Marine Laboratory in Layton, Long Key, in the Conch Republic [Florida Keys]. Mike was also a regular participant of and contributor to the North American Symposia on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology (serving as organizer of the 1988 meeting in Sarasota, and the 1990 meeting at Jackson Lake, Wyoming), and he was a participant of five of the triennial International Symposia on Aquatic Oligochaeta (ISAO).
Mike authored and co-authored several scientific publications, including two taxonomic guides focusing on the freshwater Oligochaeta, and the marine and estuarine Oligochaeta of Florida.
Mike's pleasant nature, interesting wit, and incredible knowledge of and enthusiasm about benthos in general -- and in particular anything associated with marine, estuarine, and freshwater Oligochaeta -- will be missed by all of us; however, Mike's legacy shall live on in our memory of him as a friend, as a colleague, and as an instrumental member of the Florida Association of Benthologists and the greater 'land-based' benthic community. A more complete memoriam, which included a list of Mike's professional publications, was published in a special issue of Acta Hydrobiologica Sinica focusing on the proceedings of the 10th ISAO.

In Memoriam: Charles D. Drewes, Educator and Oligochaetologist (1946-2005)
Our good friend and colleague, Charlie Drewes, passed away on Monday 4 July 2005, in Ames, Iowa; he was 58 years old. Charlie was a distinguished professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, & Organismal Biology at Iowa State University [IaSU] in Ames, Iowa, USA. While I was not a close associate of Charlie, we did communicate on occasion about oligochaetes (especially, lumbriculids) and had the opportunity to interact personally at past International Symposia on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology in 1988 (Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge) and in 1997 (University of Maine at Presque Isle). It was quite obvious when discussing biology with Charlie that his interests extended broadly beyond annelids; in particular, his most evident of passions was excellence in science education - general biology, invertebrate zoology, and most especially, the mentoring of students and teacher education. Charlie was a humble person - more interested in others' discoveries, studies, observations...than in highlighting his own pursuits - yet he was not shy when it came to encouragement, and the sharing of his own observations if it would help those who were talking with him. Well-deserved recognition of and honor for his passion for teaching included Outstanding Teacher at IaSU in 1991, Distinguished Iowa Science Teacher Award from the Iowa Academy of Science in 1998, and the Four-Year College Biology Teaching Award from the National Association of Biology Teachers [NABT] in 2002. In 2003, Charlie was honored with the title of ''University Professor'' by IaSU. Charlie was also a long time member of the Association for Biology Laboratory Education [ABLE], and he contributed regularly to the Association's annual publication entitled ''Tested Studies for Laboratory Teaching.''
Charlie's website, currently being maintained by IaSU, summarizes Charlie's diverse scientific and education outreach programs.
Contributions to the Charles Drewes Memorial Fund are welcome and will be used to build an endowment that will preserve the memory of Charlie through perpetual support of the academic enterprises that were so important to him.

The biological systematics (and nomenclature) has two concurrent tasks: a ready survey of the diversity of organisms (an applied function), and expression of their phylogeny (a theoretical function). The first aspect requires some stability while the second one leads to changes, according to escalation of our knowledge.
In their Preface (p. XVII) to the Fourth [current] Edition of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (1999), two former Presidents of the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature wrote: ''The conventional Linnaean hierarchy will not be able to survive alone: it will have to coexist with the ideas and terminology of phylogenetic (cladistic) systematics. From a cladistic perspective, our traditional nomenclature is often perceived as too prescriptive and too permissive at the same time. Too prescriptive, in so far as it forces all taxa (and their names) to fit into the arbitrary ranks of the hierarchy; too permissive, in so far as it may be equally applied to paraphyletic as to monophyletic groups. New proposals are therefore to be expected. But even in the perspective of new developments, we believe that it will never be possible or desirable to dispose of 250 years of Linnaean zoological (and botanical) taxonomy and nomenclature. One should always keep in mind that an important function of classifications is information retrieval. The Linnaean tradition will be supplemented, but not replaced, by new semantic and lexical tools.''
The problem of paraphyletic taxa represents a crucial difference between the theoretical and applied approaches in systematics: illicit in cladistic approach, many paraphyla (grades) are utilitarian for other studies. We met this conflict when many convenient and well-defined taxa (e.g., Tubificidae, Rhyacodrilinae, Lumbriculidae, Haplotaxidae, Oligochaeta, Polychaeta..., and why not -- even Annelida?) proved to be paraphyletic. The best way for discrediting any good idea, is its promotion to absurdity. Thus, attempts to adjust the Linnaean system to all Hennigian bifurcations would make the system very impractical, not to say impossible. We shall never discover all these bifurcations, and there will never be enough comparable formal ranks for them. A search for natural system needs temporary, flexible versions of nomenclature, using codified names not rigidly tied to the formal Linnaean system. The last one can follow the ''changes'' in phylogeny easily enough on the species and generic levels. On the family and order level, however, the phylogenetic relations often remain only partially resolved. A workable system (and Linnaean nomenclature) may be a comprehensive compromise between development and stability.
Different modifications of the system, based either on practical, or on cladistic approach, seem to be inevitable particularly on the highest taxonomic ranks. We should not abandon a traditional, nominal taxon at once when it appears to be paraphyletic. In particular, the recent trend to replace the taxon Oligochaeta with Clitellata everywhere, is impractical. Biologists use (and will continue to use) paraphyletic taxa (grades, instead of clades) on the highest levels of hierarchy: e.g., the Bacteria, Eukaryotes, Protista, Platyhelminthes. The nominal classes of Amphibia and Reptilia will survive in everyday use, although being paraphyletic. Accumulation of phylogenetic information should change the more vague ''cladistic'' system instead of the Linnaean system and nomenclature, required in all branches of biology.
In October 2006 (in Wuhan, China) we successfully convened -- proudly and without shame (or incident) -- the 10th International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaeta (ISAO) --
not a symposium on ''Aquatic Non-Hirudinidan Clitellates''. The 11th ISAO is now scheduled to convene in October 2009, in Turkey.

Abstract. A critical systematic revision has been carried out on the genus Fridericia MICHAELSEN, 1889 (Enchytraeidae, Oligochaeta, Annelida). The identification of species in this genus is difficult even for specialists, mostly because of uncertainties regarding the status of character variations (intra- or interspecific), and because of the confused older taxonomic literature. An enlarged approach was chosen to address these problems. The investigations were based on extensive sampling campaigns in Germany and abroad, with focus on type and reference localities, in order to obtain material for reinvestigation of as many described species as possible. Animals were obtained by extracting soil samples. They belonged to 54 different species. Two thirds of all species described from Europe were found. Animals were investigated alive and in preserved state, as stained whole mounts. Furthermore, total protein and isozyme patterns (PGM, MDH, EST) were investigated (34 species) for an appraisal of character variations inconclusive with respect to their intra- or interspecific status. Extant and available type and reference material was reinvestigated (84 nominal species), the literature was critically reviewed.
There are 197 nominal taxa at present (species and subspecies); 89 of them are accepted as valid here. The character catalogue for species diagnoses has been considerably enlarged. Almost all species of which living specimens could be obtained are described to the same level of detail, to allow inter-species comparisons for each character. The species discussions are carried out in great detail, to make the taxonomic decisions transparent. Many new species were discovered; thirteen of them are described in this study and previous contributions to the revision of the genus (SCHMELZ 1998; -2002).
Intraspecific character variation is lower than generally assumed. This allows more precise species diagnoses, but it also necessitates greater precision in the descriptions. Protein patterns confirm species diagnoses and species distinctions made on minute but constant morphological differences. A few species show geographically constant protein patterns. The majority, however, is differentiated geographically, and sometimes also locally; some of them are probably species complexes, not further differentiated here. For future micro-taxonomic studies, additional non-morphological methods are indispensable; conventional taxonomy should consider preserved material to a larger extent. The deposition of appropriately fixed reference material in all studies dealing with enchytraeids on the species level is strongly recommended.

Summary. This CD-ROM provides a unique illustrated identification key to all 184 species of Oligochaeta and 24 species of ''oligochaetoid'' polychaete annelids, recorded from the fresh waters of North-West Europe. The CD-ROM includes short descriptions of species and higher taxa, and over 500 illustrations of some essential characters for the identification of all species. A geographical search can be performed by using the MapIt module. On four different maps you can compare ranges or display the diversity of Oligochaeta species. All text is hyperlinked, synonyms are listed, an illustrated on-line glossary of used terms and all principal literature references are given. By using this CD, the zoologist can identify most of species in temporary or permanent whole mounts, or alive, without any histological preparation. This CD-ROM facilitates monitoring studies, and is a valuable and easy to use standard tool for identifying freshwater Oligochaeta for ecologists, environmentalists and students.
In Memoriam: Professor Walter J. Harman, PhD (1928-2002)
Our dear friend and colleague, Dr. Walter J. Harman, passed away on 1 April 2002, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I am finalizing an extensive obituary on Dr. Harman that will include a life list of his publications and some information not previously known by his annelid colleagues -- his love for the botanical world of Cycads. This memoriam was presented at the Ninth International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology in Wageningen, The Netherlands, in October 2003 (see additional symposium information, below). An abstract of this presentation is posted HERE, and includes a list of his publications. This memoriam was recently published in Hydrobiologia 564: 1-4 (2006), and in the symposium proceedings.
Tarmo Timm and Rheinmar Grimm recently (December 2005) published the results of their exhaustive search to validate the enigmatic taxon, Homochaeta naidina Bretscher, 1896. They concluded that the genus Homochaeta, and in particular, the taxon H. naidina, should not be included in the routine identification keys of Oligochaeta for the following reasons: no type material exists for this taxon; all subsequent material identified as this taxon, when available for review, had been misidentified; the original description by Bretscher likely was based upon different, immature specimens in the families Naididae and Tubificidae; the taxon has never been redescribed.
