The first comprehensive review of aquatic Annelida in Illinois was published in 1992 [Wetzel, M.J. Aquatic Annelida of Illinois: Introduction and checklist of species. Transactions of the Illinois State Academy of Science 85(1 and 2): 87-101.]. In that paper, the occurrence of 130 species of aquatic worms in the state, representing 71 genera in 15 families was documented. The checklist has been modified to include species identified from the state since publication of that review and to reflect recent nomenclatural and systematic changes; recent works discussing the phylogeny of aquatic Annelida also have been included.

THE TERRESTRIAL OLIGOCHAETA OF ILLINOIS

A preliminary checklist of the freshwater Annelida (Aeolosomatida, Branchiobdellida, Hirudinea, and Oligochaeta) known to occur in North Carolina, South Carolina, and / or Tennessee is posted HERE.

In September 1999, surveys for aquatic oligochaetes were conducted at one spring and 11 stream sites in the Park. Funding to continue this project was received from DLIA in August 2000, April 2001, April 2002, April 2003, April 2004, and April 2006. Additional surveys for aquatic oligochaetes in the Park were conducted in September 2000 (16 stream sites and two springs); April 2001 (13 stream sites, one swamp, and three springs); September/October 2001 (10 stream sites and five spring/seep areas); April 2002 (11 stream sites, two spring/seeps, and rimstone pools in Gregory Cave); August 2002 (3 stream sites, two spring/seeps); April/May 2003 (12 streams, four spring/seeps); September 2003 (14 streams, one spring); May 2004 (seven streams, four wetland/bog/seep areas, one limestone sink, one sewage treatment lagoon, and two terrestrial sites); October 2004 (10 streams, two springs, and one wetland drainage area); and August 2005 (9 streams, three springs, and Tom Branch Falls). During our August 2005 visit to NC, we also conducted surveys for aquatic oligochaetes at four spring/seep sites along the Blue Ridge Parkway in an attempt to collect additional specimens of an as yet unidentified taxon (Tubificidae, Rhyocodrilinae) that was first brought to my attention by Dr. David Lenat.

Progress reports summarizing results to date and the status of this project were presented to the participants of the annual DLIA meetings in Gatlinburg, TN, in December 2000, November 2001, December 2002, December 2003, December 2004, December 2005, and December 2006. To date, 19 species of aquatic oligochaetes representing 13 genera and four families have been collected from streams and springs within the Park; several other as-yet unidentified taxa representing at least two families also have been collected. All species of a aquatic oligochaetes identified from these collections are new records for the Park; in addition, four species represent new records for the state of Tennessee, and one species is a new state record for North Carolina. Subsequent to the processing of samples and identification of oligochaete specimens, the following checklist will be updated with annotations for species identified from these collections. Information pertaining to oligochaete specimens collected from the Park by other aquatic biologists will be included here once they have been identified. A paper summarizing our findings to date was one of several papers just published in a special issue of Southeastern Naturalist focusing on many of the ongoing biodiversity studies in the Park.

A preliminary checklist of the freshwater Annelida (Aeolosomatida, Branchiobdellida, Hirudinea, and Oligochaeta) known to occur in the Colorado River and its tributaries within the boundaries of the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona is posted HERE. These results were obtained during four rafting expeditions - November/December 1991, August/September 1993, June/July 2001, and July 2006.

In late 2000, Dr. John Reynolds (Oligochaetology Laboratory, Kitchener, Ontario) invited me to co-author Nomenclatura Oligochaetologica - Supplementum Quartum: a catalogue of names, descriptions and type specimens of the Oligochaeta. This fourth supplement (N.O.S.Q.) updates (Addenda Editioni Primae) and corrects (Corrigenda Editioni Primae) generic, subgeneric, specific and infra-specific names of oligochaetes published in the first three supplements (N.O.S.P., N.O.S.S., N.O.S.T.) through 31 December 2003. Genera are assigned to 36 families recognized in the third supplement (N.O.S.T.) plus two new families added in this fourth supplement; the detailed Latin definitions can also be found in N.O.S.T. A summary of taxa entries for the first four volumes is presented as follows: [families / genera / subgenera / species]: N.O.: 24 / 573 / 0 / 5,753; N.O.S.P.: 4 / 47 / 0 / 401; N.O.S.S.: 7 / 73 / 34 / 694; N.O.S.T.: 1 / 46 / 6 / 406. As of 18 March 2006, two new families, 75 new genera, 25 new subgenera, and 1,450 new species of oligochaetes are included in N.O.S.Q. Several new genera and approximately 30 new species have yet to be entered before we finalize this volume. Globally, over 8,300 species of Oligochaeta (terrestrial, marine, estuarine, and freshwater) have been described worldwide (described in papers published prior to 1 January 2004); of these, 5,700(+) are considered to be valid species. Accounts for species described in papers that are published after 31 December 2007 (our cut-off date for species to be included in NOSQ), will be posted on a web-based list via a hyperlink from this and several other websites -- so that our colleagues worldwide have timely access to new species descriptions. For us to maintain this list as current as possible, we encourage our colleagues to forward to us reprints of their papers that include descriptions of new families, genera, and species, as well as those that synonymize or supress taxa.

The 8th International Symposium on Enchytraeidae convened in Durham, United Kingdom, 2-6 July 2008.

This symposium included lectures, field work and a workshop. Field work focused on enchytraeids of habitats within the Durham Magnesian Limestone Plateau. The workshop, was funded by the British Ecological Society and was led by Dr Rudiger Schmelz.

The 3rd International Leech Conference convened in Bad Bevensen-Medingen, Germany, 14-16 March 2008. This conference was organized by the Gustav Stresemann Institut e.V. in cooperation with the German Limnological Society (DGL) - Workgroup 'Txonomy'. Plenary and poster sessions focused on leech faunistics, ecology, biology, and taxonomy. Additional information about this conference is available by contacting (via E-mail) Drs. The 3rd Latin American Meeting on Oligochaete ecology and Taxonomy (ELAETAO3) recently convened in Curitiba-PR, Brazil, 3-7 December 2007. The Third International Oligochaete Taxonomy Meeting recently convened at the Hotel Pendeli in Platres, Cyprus, 2-6 April 2007. An extensive website HERE presents a diversity of information related to this meeting, including list of and contact information for participants, meeting programme, photo album, and instructions for manuscripts for inclusion in the proceedings.

The Tenth International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaeta [ISAO] recently convened at the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, in Wuhan, China, 16-26 October 2006. This Symposium was organized and hosted by the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences; the Symposium Organizing Committee included Dr. Hongzhu Wang (Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Dr. Christer Erséus (Department of Zoology, Göteborg University, Sweden), and Dr. Yanling Liang (Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences).

66 scientists representing 10 countries participated in this very successful, informative, and enjoable symposium.

UPDATE! The Ninth International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology [ISAOB] convened at the Wageninse Berg in Wageningen, The Netherlands, 6-10 October 2003. This symposium was sponsored by WIMEK, STOWA, Alterra--Green World Research (Centre for Ecosystem Studies), Wageningen University (Subdepartment of Environmental Technology, and Department of Agrotechnology and Food Sciences), KNAW, and the LEB Foundation. The organizing committee includes Drs. Piet F.M. Verdonschot, Rebi Nijboer, and Tjeerd-Harm van den Hoek (Alterra) and Christa Ratsak, Bas Buys, and Hellen Elissen (Wageningen University). Once again, this symposium was most successful -- over 80 participants from 27 countries were present, with 40 participants attending for the first time! The proceedings from this 2003 symposium was published (July 2006) in the journal, Hydrobiologia, volume 564. The 10th ISAOB recently convened in China in October 2006 (see additional information, above).

The primary objective of this web-based directory is to facilitate communication among systematists, ecologists, and field biologists who conduct research on freshwater, estuarine, marine, and terrestrial annelid worms - especially Oligochaeta. Institutional affiliation, postal, electronic mail, and world wide web site addresses, and telephone numbers presently are included. As soon as a searchable database can be implemented for the world wide web, a summary of the researcher's areas of ecological, geographical, taxonomic, and systematic interests and expertise will also be available. The database and directory, first established in 1982, presently includes over 340 scientists from 54 countries. During 1994, a revised questionnaire was distributed to previous respondents, to researchers expressing interest in this directory, to participants of past International Symposia on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology (ISAOB), and to authors of journal articles discussing one or more aspects of annelid biology. To date, the web-based list includes annelid biologists who participated in past international oligochaete symposia, and other practicing oligochaetologists.
