    THE INHS ANNELIDA COLLECTION

The INHS Annelida Collection is perhaps the largest state collection of freshwater oligochaetes in the country, holding more than 320,000 specimens. With the exception of one monospecific group - the Acanthobdellida, or bristle worms - the collection includes representatives of the other four classes in the Annelida: Branchiobdellae (the crayfish worms, including representatives of the subfamilies Bdellodrilinae, Cambarincolinae, and Xironodrilinae); Hirudinea (the leeches, including representatives of families Haemopidae, Hirudinidae, Erpobdellidae, Glossiphoniidae, and Piscicolidae); the Oligochaeta, with representatives of the aquatic microdrile worms (families Enchytraeidae, Haplotaxidae, Lumbriculidae, Naididae, Opistocystidae, and Tubificidae), and the terrestrial megadrile worms (families Acanthodrilidae, Komarekionidae, Lumbricidae, Megascolecidae, and Sparganophilidae); Polychaeta (sand worms, tube worms, or clam worms - primarily marine) including a few representatives of the families Capitellidae and Sabellidae. Several specimens in the genus Aeolosoma(Aphanoneura, Aeolosomatida) are deposited in the Collection. The aeolosomatidans (head-crawling, or suction-feeding worms), historically aligned with the oligochaetes, are now considered to be polychaetes. This collection includes representatives of many worm species that have limited known distributions in North America. Currently, none of the annelids known or thought likely to occur in Illinois is listed as endangered or threatened by either the federal government or by the State of Illinois, nor are there any under consideration for such listing. A more complete synopsis of this collection is available by clicking on the title above this paragraph.

    THE AQUATIC ANNELIDA OF ILLINOIS
    - ANNOTATED CHECKLIST OF SPECIES -

The first comprehensive review of aquatic Annelida in Illinois was published in 1992 [Wetzel, M.J. Aquatic Annelida of Illinois: Introduction and checklist of species. Transactions of the Illinois State Academy of Science 85(1 and 2): 87-101.]. In that paper, the occurrence of 130 species of aquatic worms in the state, representing 71 genera in 15 families was documented. The checklist has been modified to include species identified from the state since publication of that review and to reflect recent nomenclatural and systematic changes; recent works discussing the phylogeny of aquatic Annelida also have been included.

    THE AQUATIC OLIGOCHAETA (ANNELIDA: CLITELLATA)
OF MONTEZUMA WELL, YAVAPAI COUNTY, ARIZONA:
    A NEAR THERMALLY CONSTANT LIMNOCRENE

Abstract: The aquatic Oligochaeta (Annelida: Clitellata) fauna of Montezuma Well, a near-thermally constant limnocrene in Yavapai County, Arizona, was studied from March 1987 through November 1996. Ten species identified from Montezuma Well and its associated aquatic habitats represent new records for the state: Haplotaxis cf. gordioides (Haplotaxidae); Chaetogaster diaphanus, Nais elinguis, and Pristinella jenkinae (Naididae); and Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, L. profundicola, L. udekemianus, Quistadrilus multisetosus, Tubifex tubifex, and Varichaetadrilus angustipenis (Tubificidae). Several unidentified species of Enchytraeidae, Lumbricidae, and Ocnerodrilidae, and Pristina sp. (Naididae) also were collected. The occurrence of Varichaetadrilus angustipenis in Montezuma Well represents the westernmost locality for this rare Nearctic species, and further supports its association with groundwater systems.

THE AQUATIC OLIGOCHAETA (ANNELIDA) OF THE
GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK, USA

This project is being underwritten by Discover Life In America, Inc.,

a not-for-profit organization administering the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory program (ATBI)
program in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP).

A preliminary checklist of the freshwater Annelida (Aeolosomatida, Branchiobdellida, Hirudinea, and Oligochaeta) known to occur in North Carolina, South Carolina, and / or Tennessee is posted HERE.

In September 1999, surveys for aquatic oligochaetes were conducted at one spring and 11 stream sites in the Park. Funding to continue this project was received from DLIA in August 2000, April 2001, April 2002, April 2003, April 2004, and April 2006. Additional surveys for aquatic oligochaetes in the Park were conducted in September 2000 (16 stream sites and two springs); April 2001 (13 stream sites, one swamp, and three springs); September/October 2001 (10 stream sites and five spring/seep areas); April 2002 (11 stream sites, two spring/seeps, and rimstone pools in Gregory Cave); August 2002 (3 stream sites, two spring/seeps); April/May 2003 (12 streams, four spring/seeps); September 2003 (14 streams, one spring); May 2004 (seven streams, four wetland/bog/seep areas, one limestone sink, one sewage treatment lagoon, and two terrestrial sites); October 2004 (10 streams, two springs, and one wetland drainage area); and August 2005 (9 streams, three springs, and Tom Branch Falls). During our August 2005 visit to NC, we also conducted surveys for aquatic oligochaetes at four spring/seep sites along the Blue Ridge Parkway in an attempt to collect additional specimens of an as yet unidentified taxon (Tubificidae, Rhyocodrilinae) that was first brought to my attention by Dr. David Lenat.

Progress reports summarizing results to date and the status of this project were presented to the participants of the annual DLIA meetings in Gatlinburg, TN, in December 2000, November 2001, December 2002, December 2003, December 2004, December 2005, and December 2006. To date, 19 species of aquatic oligochaetes representing 13 genera and four families have been collected from streams and springs within the Park; several other as-yet unidentified taxa representing at least two families also have been collected. All species of a aquatic oligochaetes identified from these collections are new records for the Park; in addition, four species represent new records for the state of Tennessee, and one species is a new state record for North Carolina. Subsequent to the processing of samples and identification of oligochaete specimens, the following checklist will be updated with annotations for species identified from these collections. Information pertaining to oligochaete specimens collected from the Park by other aquatic biologists will be included here once they have been identified. Please visit the website, above, for additional information on this project. A paper summarizing our findings to date was one of several papers just published in a special issue of Southeastern Naturalist focusing on many of the ongoing biodiversity studies in the Park.

    THE AQUATIC OLIGOCHAETA (ANNELIDA)
OF THE COLORADO RIVER AND ITS TRIBUTARIES,
    GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, ARIZONA

A preliminary checklist of the freshwater Annelida (Aeolosomatida, Branchiobdellida, Hirudinea, and Oligochaeta) known to occur in the Colorado River and its tributaries within the boundaries of the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona is posted HERE. These results were obtained during four rafting expeditions - November/December 1991, August/September 1993, June/July 2001, and July 2006.

    NOMENCLATURA OLIGOCHAETOLOGICA SUPPLEMENTUM QUARTUM -
A Catalogue of Names, Descriptions and Type Specimens of the Oligochaeta

In late 2000, Dr. John Reynolds (Oligochaetology Laboratory, Kitchener, Ontario) invited me to co-author Nomenclatura Oligochaetologica - Supplementum Quartum: a catalogue of names, descriptions and type specimens of the Oligochaeta. This fourth supplement (N.O.S.Q.) updates (Addenda Editioni Primae) and corrects (Corrigenda Editioni Primae) generic, subgeneric, specific and infra-specific names of oligochaetes published in the first three supplements (N.O.S.P., N.O.S.S., N.O.S.T.) through 31 December 2003. Genera are assigned to 36 families recognized in the third supplement (N.O.S.T.) plus two new families added in this fourth supplement; the detailed Latin definitions can also be found in N.O.S.T. A summary of taxa entries for the first four volumes is presented as follows: [families / genera / subgenera / species]: N.O.: 24 / 573 / 0 / 5,753; N.O.S.P.: 4 / 47 / 0 / 401; N.O.S.S.: 7 / 73 / 34 / 694; N.O.S.T.: 1 / 46 / 6 / 406. As of 18 March 2006, two new families, 75 new genera, 25 new subgenera, and 1,450 new species of oligochaetes are included in N.O.S.Q. Several new genera and approximately 30 new species have yet to be entered before we finalize this volume. Globally, over 8,300 species of Oligochaeta (terrestrial, marine, estuarine, and freshwater) have been described worldwide (described in papers published prior to 1 January 2004); of these, 5,700(+) are considered to be valid species. Accounts for species described in papers that are published after 31 December 2007 (our cut-off date for species to be included in NOSQ), will be posted on a web-based list via a hyperlink from this and several other websites -- so that our colleagues worldwide have timely access to new species descriptions. For us to maintain this list as current as possible, we encourage our colleagues to forward to us reprints of their papers that include descriptions of new families, genera, and species, as well as those that synonymize or supress taxa.

For information on ordering N.O. and the first three supplements (N.O.S.P., N.O.S.S., and N.O.S.T.), please visit THIS SITE. Ordering information for the fourth supplement, N.O.S.Q., will be posted here as soon as it is published (late-2008).

    - AQUATIC OLIGOCHAETOLOGISTS OF THE WORLD -

The primary objective of this web-based directory is to facilitate communication among systematists, ecologists, and field biologists who conduct research on freshwater, estuarine, marine, and terrestrial annelid worms - especially Oligochaeta. Institutional affiliation, postal, electronic mail, and world wide web site addresses, and telephone numbers presently are included. As soon as a searchable database can be implemented for the world wide web, a summary of the researcher's areas of ecological, geographical, taxonomic, and systematic interests and expertise will also be available. The database and directory, first established in 1982, presently includes over 340 scientists from 54 countries. During 1994, a revised questionnaire was distributed to previous respondents, to researchers expressing interest in this directory, to participants of past International Symposia on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology (ISAOB), and to authors of journal articles discussing one or more aspects of annelid biology. To date, the web-based list includes annelid biologists who participated in past international oligochaete symposia, and other practicing oligochaetologists. The 10th international symposium recently convened at the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan, China, 16-26 October 2006. More specific information on these and other pertinent events can be found above on this same website, under the headings ''Upcoming Annelida Conferences and Symposia'' or ''Recently Convened Annelida Conferences and Symposia.''

    > Please note: This directory, and the information contained therein, has been compiled for the exclusive, scientific, non-commercial use by researchers working in the field of annelid systematics and ecology. Please respect the professional and personal privacy of those listed in the directory.

Please note that, while these annual compilation focus primarily on the publications for the year in parentheses, other papers published both prior to and after that date (xxxx) are included [as well as citations that may have had typographical errors in previous postings via this website].

The Hirudinea sections of the NABS 1996 - 2007 bibliographies, long authored by Dr. Donald J. Klemm (USEPA), and more recently co-authored by Klemm and Dr. Bill Moser (USNM-Smithsonian Institution) have also been included in many of the above electronic files for your convenience. Contributions to the Annelida sections of previous annual NABS bibliographies (years 1979 through 1991) are being prepared for posting here as time permits; in the mean time, please visit the NABS Bibliography Search (1959-1992) to access the NABS Bibliography Database.

Future compilations for the annelid sections of the annual NABS Bibliography will be posted during July or August of each year. I encourage you to use this bibliographic material in your personal and non-commercial scientific research. Use of information presented in these bibliographic compilations shall acknowledge the North American Benthological Society, the Illinois Natural History Survey, and this World Wide Web site URL as the supporting agencies and source, respectively. I acknowledge the professional interaction with my esteemed colleagues working in the fields of annelid systematics and ecology, and benthic biology; in particular, I appreciate the continued support of this bibliography by the North American Benthological Society, and participants and organizers of the eight International Symposia on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology and the seven North American Oligochaete Conferences. I also acknowledge the assistance of past and present INHS librarians D. Dodds, D. Sublette, M. Lusk, C. Heister, E. Knight, E. Wohlgemuth, J. Jacoby, E. Day, J. Beverly, J. Phillips, A. FitzSimmons, and S. Braxton; the staff of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Library system (especially the past and present staff of the UIUC Biology, Map and Geography, Stacks, and Geology libraries); the staff of the Urbana and Champaign public libraries; research assistants M. Biyal, B. Kasprowicz, M. Lancaster, E. Lancaster, J. Jakubanis, T. Sudduth, T. Lynch, A. Appleton, S. Clementz, and K. Moss; and the perennial support of D.W. Webb (Chairman, NABS Literature Review Committee), W.U. Brigham (deceased), and other members of the NABS Literature Review Committee); their collective efforts during the last 29 years have contributed significantly to the coverage and accuracy of the bibliographic compilations provided at the above URL sites. I also acknowledge the staff of Current Contents, Biosis, Agricultural Abstracts, Zoological Record, and Fish & Fisheries Worldwide for providing bibliographic services to institutions and the general public.

Please send reprints of your publications to me if they refer in any way to aquatic Annelida. This will ensure an accurate database entry and citation for the next annual bibliography, and provide notification of your work to an international audience of aquatic biologists - through the North American Benthological Society and via this web site.

    ANNELIDAN APHORISMS: VERMES IN TIME

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Watch The Earthworm - Miss The Eclipse'.....Ancient Chinese Aphorism

    > More recently, Sir Isaac Newton embellished this Chinese aphorism to read

'All my life I have felt as if I have been exploring a shore and looking at a few pretty shells here and there, while the whole ocean of truth lay undiscovered before me.'

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Vett du' la han till 'dar ude fans en professor, och han satt där och tittade i sitt mikroscåp i trettio år - på en mask. Te inga nytta.' .....translation, from an old Swedish aphorism: 'Do you know' he added, 'out there was a professor, and he sat there looking in his microscope for thirty years - at a worm. To no use.'

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'I would not enter on my list of friends, (tho' grac'd with polish'd manners and fine sense yet wanting sensibility) the man who needlessly sets foot upon a worm.' -- William Cowper, The Task (1784)

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    He with a smile did then his words repeat;
And said that, gathering leeches, far and wide
He traveled; stirring thus about his feet
The waters of the pools where they abide.
    "Once I could meet with them on every side;
    But they have dwindled long by slow decay;
Yet still I persevere, and find them where I may."

-- William Wordsworth, Resolution and Independence (1802)

[written at Town-End, Grasmere; part of a conversation between Wordsworth
and an old man he met a short distance from his cottage, while traveling across
    the old moors.
    ]

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Oligochaete: Thou taxonomic pain!
My mouth and mind and memory affirm,
'Twoud be much less a stress upon the brain
To designate you merely as a worm.
But then again, perhaps it is untrue
To brand you as too simple for your name.
For possibly, the tests we put you through
Just don't quite fit your undulating frame.
Psychologists are on the highest ground
When studying the ways of mice and men.
But with invertebrates they're often found
Quite ignorant of how they should begin.
The object of my study is to try
To help both man and worm see eye to eye.

    -- D.N. Howell (1973); published 1974, in Megadrilogica 1(10): 1.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'The study of polychaetes used to be a leisurely occupation, practised calmly and slowly.' -- Kristian Fauchald, The Polychaete Worms (1977)

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Not every bird is a nightengale, and not every oligochaete is Tubifex tubifex.' -- Dr. Tarmo Timm, Estonian Oligochaetologist, 22 August 1997, in Presque Isle, Maine, USA, at the 7th International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaete Biology

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'We [who study worms] all belong to a monophyletic family with dedication and friendship as our synapomophies.' -- Dr. Hongzhu Wang, Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan Hubei, China - - personal observation of the warm and sincere interaction of all participants of the 8th International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaeta, convened at the Universidad del País Vasco, Bilbao, Spain, 17-22 July 2000.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"RULES TO REMEMBER" (at least periodically)

    > "Forget about finding the One True Tree.
    > Trees reflect the quality of the characters and the character states and thus, the quality of the material examined.
    > Use polytomies to find out what to do next.
    > The final word about phylogeny or systematics will never be said.
    > Systematics and phylogeny are comparative in approach: systematics of a single organism makes no sense."

-- Dr. Kristian Fauchald, September 2002, Osnabrück, Germany (during symposium entitled

'Morphology, Molecules, Evolution and Phylogeny in Polychaeta and related Taxa')

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Every worm has an end.' -- Dr. Olav Giere (Universität Hamburg Zoologisches Institüt und Zoologisches Museum, Hamburg, Germany), - - reflections on retirement from oligochaete research, and in anticipation of renewed focus on meiofaunal studies; shared with a small group of participants at the 9th International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaeta, convened at the Wageningse Berg, Wageningen, The Netherlands, 6-10 October 2003.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'E-Mail Touch.' -- a common phrase stated throughout the 10th International Symposium on Aquatic Oligochaeta, convened at the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wuhan, China, 16-26 October 2006; the use and meaning of this phrase was two-fold: 1) in reference to the most common form of communication throughout the planning of this symposium, and 2) stated while simultaneously tapping one's drink glass [on the table itself, or on the circular/rotating 'lazy susan' platform in the middle of dining tables] during group toasts at all meals during this symposium.
