Anointing: examples
Anointing in a 4th instar nymph of
Macropsis
sp. The nymph is wallowing in a droplet of the secretory fluid released onto the plant. The fluid contains alternative,
non-brochosomal Malpighian tubule products
. This type of immature anointing, "bathing", is displayed by nymphs of several leafhopper subfamilies, as well as by the
treehopper nymphs
. It is distinct from a smearing-like anointing performed by other leafhopper nymphs.
