4.3. Development of brochosomes

Brochosomes do not arise in their final state. They gradually develop inside of secretory cells of the Malpighian tubules. Brochosomes originate in Golgi complexes -- the organelles that process and pack products of synthesis that are meant to be exported from the cell. Golgi complexes of the brochosome-producing cells look like irregular clusters of vesicles. Some of these vesicles contain individual brochosomes at early stages of development (B1--B2 below). Brochosomes complete their maturation (stages B3 to B4 or B6) as the secretory vacuoles move from Golgi complexes to the apical cell membrane.
